Rockefeller Center
Modern Architecture · New York, New York
Nineteen buildings across three Midtown blocks, built privately by John D. Rockefeller Jr. through the Depression between 1930 and 1939 after the opera house it was meant to serve pulled out. It is the largest privately funded building project of its era and the reason Midtown has any coherent public space at all — the Channel Gardens, the sunken plaza and the roof gardens were designed as a connected sequence, not left over.
