1850s Rural Gothic Country House Built For Merchant Banker Joseph Shipley, Now A House Museum Run By New Castle County Inside A Wooded County Park · Wilmington, Delaware

Rockwood is a Victorian country house museum set in wooded county parkland on the north side of Wilmington, between Concord Pike and the Delaware River. The mansion was built in the 1850s for Joseph Shipley, a Wilmington-born merchant banker who had made his fortune in England and came home wanting an English country house. The result is a stone house in the Rural Gothic style, with steep gables, pointed details and a Victorian conservatory of glass and iron attached to one side, surrounded by lawns, specimen trees and old carriage roads. Inside, the rooms are furnished with Victorian-era pieces and family belongings, shown on guided tours on a limited weekly schedule. The grounds are a free county park with woodland trails, open lawns and a link to the Northern Delaware Greenway, so many local visitors come only to walk and never go indoors. The county holds seasonal events here, above all Victorian holiday decorations in December and outdoor gatherings in summer. It is modest and local next to Winterthur or Nemours, but pleasant, cheap and rarely crowded.

The park grounds are generally open every day from about dawn to dusk, like other New Castle County parks, and walking the lawns and trails is free. The mansion is different: it opens only for guided tours on a limited weekly schedule, commonly on some or all days from Wednesday to Sunday, and it is closed on the remaining weekdays, so arriving on a Monday or Tuesday will usually mean the grounds only - confirm the current days before you go. Tours start at set times during the day rather than continuously, and the last tour starts well before closing. The house may close for private events, weddings, maintenance or county holidays, and holiday periods can bring special evening hours for the Victorian Christmas decorations, sometimes with separate tickets. Summer concerts and festivals on the lawns follow their own dates and times. Confirm tour days, times and any event closures with the county or the museum before making a special trip.
