Rodin Museum
Art Museum · Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
The largest collection of Auguste Rodin outside Paris, assembled in three years by the Philadelphia cinema magnate Jules Mastbaum, who died before it opened in 1929. The building and its formal garden were designed by Paul Cret and the French landscape architect Jacques Greber as a single composition on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, and the effect is a small piece of Paris dropped onto a Philadelphia boulevard. The Thinker sits at the gate, on the pavement side of the railings, where anyone walking past can see it for nothing.
