Roger Williams Park Zoo
Zoo · Providence, Rhode Island
Founded in 1872 and described by its own sources as the third oldest zoo in the United States, set in forty acres of the much larger Roger Williams Park in south Providence. It holds something over eight hundred animals across roughly a hundred and sixty species, with African elephants, snow leopards, red pandas, giraffes and a large primate collection. It is a mid-sized city zoo that has been steadily rebuilding its habitats, and its parking is free, which for an urban zoo is unusual.

Open daily, generally from mid-morning, with ⚠ LAST ADMISSION IN THE MID-AFTERNOON AND THE GATES CLOSING AT 4 PM — check the day's times before a late start, because this catches out more visitors here than anything else. Hours extend for seasonal events including a winter light display, and reduce in the coldest months. Adult admission is roughly $20-$30, priced dynamically by date, with reductions for children; buying online and choosing a weekday is materially cheaper than a summer weekend. ⚠ PARKING IS FREE across four large lots but is first-come and first-served, fills on fine weekends, and is not guaranteed by a ticket — the zoo suggests ride-share or the bus on high-volume days. The surrounding Roger Williams Park is free and open separately.
