Rogers Pass and Glacier National Park
Glacier National Park (Parks Canada) / Rogers Pass National Historic Site · Glacier National Park, British Columbia
The Trans-Canada Highway's crossing of the Selkirk Mountains between Revelstoke and Golden, climbing to about 1,330 metres through Glacier National Park, ⚠ ONE OF THE MOST AVALANCHE-PRONE ROAD CORRIDORS IN THE WORLD. The pass was found in 1881 by the surveyor Major A. B. Rogers for the Canadian Pacific Railway, and the railway crossed it in 1885 - but avalanches killed hundreds over the following decades, including 58 railway workers in a single slide in 1910, and the railway eventually tunnelled beneath it. The highway opened in 1962 and is protected by concrete snowsheds and one of the world's largest mobile avalanche-control programs, in which Canadian Army gunners fire artillery at the slopes to bring snow down safely. In summer, short trails lead through old-growth cedar at the Hemlock Grove boardwalk, past railway ruins on the Loop Brook trail and up toward glaciers. ⚠ WINTER CLOSURES FOR AVALANCHE CONTROL CAN LAST HOURS, AND WINTER TIRES ARE MANDATORY.
