Roma Historic District

Heritage District · Roma, Texas

A National Historic Landmark district on a bluff above the Rio Grande, built when Roma was the head of steamboat navigation on the river and trade money paid for brick and sandstone buildings in a border vernacular that exists almost nowhere else. Elia Kazan filmed Viva Zapata! on the plaza in 1951, and the buildings he used are still standing.

Roma Plaza, Estrella Street, Roma, Texas, 78584, United States

The plaza and streets are a public National Historic Landmark district, free and open at all times. ⚠ THE VISITOR CENTRE AND THE ROMA BLUFFS WORLD BIRDING CENTER SITE KEEP LIMITED HOURS I COULD NOT VERIFY — check before driving out, because this is a long way from anywhere. ⚠ Most buildings are private or closed; this is a district to look at rather than enter. Dining in town is very limited — Rio Grande City is twenty minutes east.
