Prime Spring And Autumn Birding; Fall Migration Is A Draw. Mosquitoes And Ticks In Summer. · Morpeth, Ontario
Rondeau Provincial Park is a sandspit on the north shore of Lake Erie in southwestern Ontario, about 40 km south of Chatham-Kent. Established in 1894, it is Ontario's second-oldest provincial park, and it protects a rare Carolinian forest of southern trees, a large marsh and a long sandy beach. It suits birders, families who want an easy nature day, cyclists and campers. It is not a dramatic place; the pleasure is quiet woods, boardwalks and water views on mostly flat ground. Spring and autumn are excellent for birds, and fall migration of hawks and warblers is the big draw. In summer expect mosquitoes, ticks and poison ivy, so cover up and check yourself. Lake Erie can have rip currents at the beach. Point Pelee National Park is a separate listing nearby. Allow half a day for a drive and a boardwalk, or a full day with cycling and a swim. Confirm gate fees and visitor centre hours before you set out, since both change by season.
Sandspit park on the north shore of Lake Erie about 40 km south of Chatham-Kent, with Carolinian forest, a marsh, a long beach, a visitor centre and a main park road, Morpeth, Ontario, Canada
The park is open year round for day use, but services follow the season. The visitor centre and campgrounds are usually staffed from late spring through early autumn, with reduced hours or closure in winter, so confirm current times with Ontario Parks. Day users normally pay a park gate fee per vehicle, and campers pay for a site; check the current rates. The main park road may close in bad weather or high water, and parts of the spit can flood in storms. Many visitors come in the early morning for birds, and sunset can be pleasant on the beach. Roads and trails can be icy in winter. Food and fuel are in Morpeth, Blenheim and Chatham-Kent.
