Campobello is a New Brunswick island reached by a bridge from LUBEC, MAINE - which means Canadians usually drive through the United States to get to it - and on it stands a thirty-four room shingled cottage that was the Roosevelt family's summer home. FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT CAME HERE FROM CHILDHOOD AND CONTRACTED POLIO HERE IN AUGUST 1921, at thirty-nine, after a day of sailing and swimming. He returned only three times afterwards. In 1964 Canada and the United States created something with no equivalent anywhere: THE ONLY PARK IN THE WORLD JOINTLY CREATED AND MANAGED BY TWO NATIONAL GOVERNMENTS, run by a commission with members appointed by both, on Canadian soil, funded by both, and FREE TO ENTER. The cottage is preserved with the family's own furnishings. Around it are nine hundred hectares of island - bog, beach and headland - and Head Harbour Lighthouse stands at the northern tip.

SEASONAL. THE COTTAGE AND VISITOR CENTRE OPERATE ROUGHLY LATE MAY TO MID-OCTOBER, daily during the season, and ADMISSION IS FREE - unusual for a site of this significance and a deliberate condition of the 1964 agreement. THE GROUNDS AND DRIVING TRAILS ARE OPEN YEAR-ROUND. GETTING THERE IS THE PLANNING PROBLEM: the only year-round road access is the FDR Memorial Bridge from LUBEC, MAINE, WHICH MEANS CROSSING AN INTERNATIONAL BORDER TWICE AND CARRYING PASSPORTS even for Canadians travelling within Canada. A SEASONAL FERRY from Deer Island operates in summer only. CHECK BORDER CROSSING HOURS AND REQUIREMENTS BEFORE YOU TRAVEL. Tea with Eleanor, a popular interpretive programme, requires advance booking. Note that the island observes ATLANTIC TIME while Lubec is on Eastern.
