Rosecliff
Historic House · Newport, Rhode Island
A Bellevue Avenue house completed in 1902 for Theresa Fair Oelrichs, heiress to a Comstock Lode silver fortune, designed by Stanford White on the model of the Grand Trianon at Versailles. It was built around a single room: the largest ballroom in Newport, forty by eighty feet, and the house exists to hold parties in it. That, and the heart-shaped staircase, is why it is the most filmed house on the avenue and the least furnished — the rooms are staged for the space rather than crowded with the original contents.
