Roskilde, a small cathedral town about 25 minutes by train west of Copenhagen, holds two of Denmark's defining sights. Roskilde Cathedral, begun in the late 1100s, is one of the earliest large brick Gothic churches in Scandinavia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995; for more than five centuries it has been the burial church of the Danish monarchy, with around 40 kings and queens (the exact count depends on how you tally) resting in tombs that run from medieval to modern. A pleasant downhill walk away, the Viking Ship Museum on Roskilde Fjord displays five real Viking ships that were deliberately sunk around a thousand years ago to block the fjord, raised in the 1960s and now shown in a hall facing the water where they were found. Outside, in the museum harbour, boatbuilders make full-size replicas with Viking-age tools. The honest caveat: the cathedral closes to visitors for services, weddings and funerals, and in early summer the Roskilde Festival fills the town.

Both sights are open all year, but on different patterns - check both schedules before you travel. The cathedral usually opens daily, with shorter hours in winter and later opening on Sundays and church holidays; it closes to sightseers during services, weddings, funerals and some concerts, sometimes at short notice. The Viking Ship Museum opens daily in summer and with shorter hours off season; the sailing trips in replica boats run only in the warmer months and are weather-dependent. From Copenhagen Central Station, regional trains reach Roskilde in about 20-30 minutes; the cathedral is a 5-10 minute walk from Roskilde station and the museum a further 15-20 minutes downhill through the town park. Nothing needs booking except groups, guided tours and, on busy summer days, the sailing trips.
