Rothko Chapel
Sacred Site · Houston, Texas
An octagonal brick room in Montrose holding fourteen enormous, almost black paintings that Mark Rothko made for it, finished in 1971 a year after he died and never seen by him in place. It is non-denominational, it is free, and it asks nothing of you except that you sit down in it — which is why people describe visits here in terms usually reserved for something other than looking at art.
