Rowan Oak

National Historic Landmark · Oxford, Mississippi

The house William Faulkner bought derelict in 1930 and lived in until he died in 1962, on thirty wooded acres at the edge of Oxford. He did most of the repairs himself, wrote almost all of the major work here, and used the Mississippi county he invented — Yoknapatawpha — as the setting for fifteen novels. The room that makes the visit is his office: he plotted A Fable directly onto the plaster walls in pencil and red grease pencil, day by day, and the outline is still there.

916 Old Taylor Road, Oxford, Mississippi, 38655, United States

Generally open Tuesday to Saturday with Sunday afternoon opening, roughly 10 AM to 4 PM, and CLOSED MONDAYS — verify before travelling, as hours are shorter than most visitors expect. Closed on university holidays. The grounds and woodland trails are FREE and open even when the house is closed.
