Roxborough State Park
A National Natural Landmark, A Colorado Natural Area And An Important Bird Area The Only Site In The State To Hold All Three Designations. Red Fountain Formation Fins Tilted On Edge, Thirty Minutes From Denver, With No Dogs, No Bicycles And No Climbing Permitted. · Littleton, Colorado
Roxborough holds the same red sandstone fins as Red Rocks, Garden of the Gods and the Flatirons - the Fountain Formation, tilted on edge by the rise of the mountains - but it is the one the crowds never found. Thirty minutes from Denver, it is the only site in Colorado designated a National Natural Landmark, a Colorado Natural Area and an Important Bird Area all at once, and the park protects that status with rules that surprise people: no dogs at all, no bicycles, no rock climbing and no picnicking away from the designated area. The result is a place that is quiet in a way nowhere else on the Front Range manages, where mule deer graze between the fins, black bears work the scrub oak in autumn and the birdlife is the reason serious watchers drive out. It is the same rock as Red Rocks with none of the car park. The gates lock at a posted seasonal time and the no-dogs rule is absolute, which between them keep it the quietest place on the Front Range.
4751 East Roxborough Drive, Littleton, Colorado, 80125, United States
Open daily year-round during daylight hours, with the gates locking at a posted time that changes with the season - being inside after closing is a genuine problem, not a technicality. The visitor centre keeps shorter hours. A Colorado state parks pass or daily vehicle pass is required. NO DOGS ARE PERMITTED ANYWHERE IN THE PARK, including in vehicles in the car park, and no bicycles or climbing are allowed. Trails can close for wildlife activity, and the park sometimes reaches capacity on fine weekends.
