The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh sits at Inverleith, about 2 km north of the city centre, and is one of the oldest botanic gardens in Britain. It was founded in 1670 as a physic garden near Holyrood and moved to its present site in 1820. It is a working research institution as well as a visitor garden, with a large living collection laid out over rolling lawns, a rock garden, a Chinese hillside and glasshouses. The outdoor garden is generally free to enter, while the glasshouses carry a charge, so confirm current prices. It suits plant lovers, families and anyone wanting a calm half day away from the Royal Mile. It is big and hilly in parts, so wear good shoes. The weather in Edinburgh changes fast, and the glasshouses give a dry refuge. Spring rhododendrons and autumn colour are the high points. Stockbridge is a pleasant walk away for food, and the Royal Yacht Britannia is a separate trip.
Large botanic garden at Inverleith about 2 km north of Edinburgh city centre, with glasshouses, a Chinese hillside, a rock garden and the Arboretum, reached by bus or on foot from the New Town, Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
The garden is open every day of the year except for Christmas Day and New Year's Day, with daytime hours that change by season - later closing in summer, around dusk in winter. Exact times are not fixed here, so confirm on the garden website. The east gate on Inverleith Row is the main entrance, with a west gate on Arboretum Place used by many locals. The glasshouses, cafes and shop keep their own shorter hours and often close earlier than the grounds. Last entry to the glasshouses is commonly 30 minutes before closing. Some events and trails are seasonal, and the paths are not lit, so plan to leave before dusk in winter.
