Royal Hill of Ambohimanga

UNESCO World Heritage Site: Royal Hill Of Ambohimanga (2001). The Fortified Royal Compound And Sacred Hill Of The Merina Kings, Still A Place Of Pilgrimage With Royal Houses, Sacred Stones And A Trial Pond · Ambohimanga, Analamanga

The Royal Hill of Ambohimanga is a fortified hilltop compound about 24 km north-east of Antananarivo, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. It was the spiritual and political centre of the Merina kingdom, and King Andrianampoinimerina made it a royal capital from 1787 onwards. The compound is ringed by stone walls and entered through massive stone gates once sealed by a rolling disc. Inside are the royal houses of timber and rosewood, sacred stones, a royal bath, a trial pond and old trees that are still revered. It remains a place of pilgrimage, with offerings and ceremonies, so behaviour matters: there are fady, taboos, such as removing shoes in some areas, avoiding pork, and limits on photography; confirm the current rules with the guide. Visitors usually need a guide, who explains the history in French or English. It is small and can feel rushed, and some areas are closed. The views over the highlands are a reward.
