The Royal Palace is the home of the King of Cambodia, built in 1866 beside the Tonle Sap river in the centre of Phnom Penh. Its yellow and white buildings carry tall golden spires in the Khmer style, topped with the four faces of Brahma. Visitors enter the Throne Hall, used for coronations and royal ceremonies, then walk the courtyards to the Silver Pagoda, named for the more than 5,000 silver tiles that cover its floor. Inside are an emerald Buddha and a life-size gold Buddha set with diamonds, and gifts made to the crown over the generations. The Napoleon III Pavilion, a prefabricated iron building given by France, stands in the grounds. The king still lives here, so the Khemarin quarters and other private buildings are closed to the public. The dress code is strict, with shoulders and knees covered. Photography is allowed in the courtyards but not inside the Silver Pagoda. It is the main sight of the capital and takes about two hours.
