Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans

Semicircular Royal Saltworks Designed By Claude Nicolas Ledoux As An Ideal Factory Town, Completed 1779; UNESCO World Heritage Site Inscribed 1982, Extended In 2009 With The Great Saltworks Of Salins Les Bains · Arc-et-Senans, Burgundy-Franche-Comte

The Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans is a salt factory built for Louis XV and Louis XVI between 1775 and 1779 by the architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, on the edge of the Forest of Chaux in the Doubs. Brine was piped in wooden conduits for about twenty kilometres from Salins-les-Bains, confirm, and boiled down here, where wood for the fires was plentiful. Ledoux laid the works out as a great semicircle: the columned Director's House at the centre, the two long saltmaking buildings beside it, and the workers' housing, cooperage and forge around the curve, all watched from the middle. He later drew it as the core of an ideal city that was never built. Salt making ended in the 1890s, the buildings decayed and were rescued in the twentieth century, and in 1982 UNESCO inscribed the site, adding the Great Saltworks of Salins in 2009. Today it holds a museum of Ledoux's architectural models, exhibitions, gardens and rooms for overnight stays. It is small and can be seen in a morning, and pairs well with Salins, the Jura vineyards and Besançon.

The Saline royale is open every day for most of the year, with the longest hours in July and August, shorter hours in spring and autumn, and reduced winter opening; it usually closes for a period around January and on 25 December and 1 January, confirm the current calendar. Last entry is typically an hour or so before closing. The gardens are best from late spring to early autumn, and a garden festival has in recent years run through the summer season; confirm whether it is on and its dates. Temporary exhibitions change during the year. Guided tours in French run at set times, more often in summer, and group or foreign-language tours must be booked ahead. The site also hosts seminars and events, and rooms inside the historic buildings can be booked for overnight stays, which sell out on summer weekends; confirm availability. The Grande Saline at Salins-les-Bains is visited on guided tours only, with a timetable that is thin in winter and a closure period, so check both sites before planning a combined day.
