The Royal Tombs of Hue are the mausoleums of the Nguyen emperors, built in the 19th century in forested grounds south of the city along the Perfume River, and part of the UNESCO Complex of Hue Monuments. Each is less a grave than a private park of lakes, pavilions, temples and stone courts where the emperor could rest in life and be remembered after. Tu Duc is the most peaceful, with a pine-shaded lake and a poet-king's romantic mood. Khai Dinh is the most ornate, small and steep, with concrete halls covered in glass and ceramic mosaic. Minh Mang is the most formal, laid out on a long axis of courts, bridges and gates. The tombs are spread over roughly 5 to 15 km, so you need a ride between them. Expect heat, steps, and uneven upkeep: some halls are faded, and tour buses crowd Khai Dinh at midday. Thien Mu pagoda sits on the river on the way. Hue Imperial City is a separate place, covered on its own.

The tombs open daily, usually from early morning, and close in the late afternoon, with closing earlier in the cooler months, so confirm current hours at the gate. Some tombs have been reported to shut for a midday break or close earlier than expected, so do not leave the last tomb for the end of the day. Each tomb has its own ticket and none is FREE at the inner courts. Walking in the surrounding village roads and the outside of the walls is FREE. There is no weekly closing day, though individual tombs can be CLOSED for repairs, and Tet brings changed hours.
