Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse
Lighthouse First Lit In 1900 And Swallowed By A Moving Dune, Moved Inland On Rails In 2019 To Escape The Eroding North Sea Cliff · Lonstrup, North Denmark Region
Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse stands on top of a high, shifting dune cliff on the North Sea coast of north-west Jutland, between the fishing villages of Lonstrup and Lokken. It was first lit in 1900, when it stood well back from the sea, but the coast here loses ground every year and westerly winds kept blowing sand up the cliff until the dune buried the keepers' buildings and rose around the tower itself. The light was switched off in the late 1960s, a sand-drift museum in the old buildings closed around the early 2000s as the sand took over, and by the late 2010s the cliff edge was only a few metres away. In 2019 the whole brick tower, said to weigh roughly 700 tonnes, was lifted onto rails and rolled some 70 m inland in a single day, a move watched across Denmark. People come for the strange, almost desert-like landscape of pale sand, marram grass and sea views, and for the story of a coast being eaten away. The honest caveat: this is a short walk to one tower in an exposed dune, the cliff edge is actively collapsing and must be kept well clear of, and wind can make the visit brief.
Rubjerg Knude, on the dune cliff between Lonstrup and Lokken, Lonstrup, North Denmark Region, Denmark
The dune and the outside of the lighthouse are open land and can be visited at any time of year, day or night, free of charge. Access to the tower interior and any stair to the top has varied since the 2019 move - some seasons it has been open in summer, at other times closed - so confirm the current arrangement locally or with the Hjorring area tourist office before you plan around it. From the car park near the Rubjerg Knude road it is roughly a 10-20 minute walk on a sandy track uphill to the tower. There is no train: drive, cycle, or take a regional bus to Lonstrup or Lokken and walk the last few kilometres. Nothing needs to be booked.
