Ruka

Ski Resort On A Fell In Kuusamo, One Of The Longest Ski Seasons In Finland; End Point Of The Karhunkierros Trail · Kuusamo, North Ostrobothnia

Ruka is a ski resort on a fell of roughly 490 m in Kuusamo, northeastern Finland, just south of the Arctic Circle and close to the Russian border. It is known for one of the longest ski seasons in Finland: stored snow and snowmaking often let the first slopes open in October or November, and skiing can continue into May when the snow holds. The village sits at the foot of the slopes with hotels, cabins, restaurants and a gondola-style lift up the hill, and it hosts an early-season Nordic skiing World Cup weekend. People come for downhill and cross-country skiing, husky and reindeer safaris, snowmobiling and a chance of the northern lights; in summer they come for hiking, mountain biking and the Oulanka wilderness next door - Ruka is the end point of the roughly 80 km Karhunkierros (Bear's Trail). The honest caveat: by Alpine standards the vertical drop is small, a couple of hundred metres, early-season opening depends entirely on snow, and midwinter days are very short and cold.

Open year-round as a village. The ski season typically runs from late autumn to spring - opening dates and how many slopes run depend on snow and cold, so check the resort's current season dates. Lifts usually run daytime with floodlit evening skiing on some slopes in midwinter. Summer brings hiking, biking and some lifts, but many services close in the quiet months of May-June and October. Kuusamo airport is about 30 km away. Book accommodation, safaris and ski rental ahead for Christmas, New Year, February and Easter.
