Russian Gulch State Park
State Park · Mendocino, California
Russian Gulch State Park sits on the Mendocino coast just north of the village of Mendocino, off Highway 1. It packs several landscapes into a small area: a headlands with a blowhole called the Devil's Punch Bowl, a collapsed sea cave where surf churns in a pit; a small beach cove; and a shaded canyon of ferns and redwoods with a trail that leads to a waterfall (confirm the length and the current condition). A campground sits inland in the canyon (confirm size, season and booking). The coast here is foggy, windy and cold for much of the year, and the water is too cold and rough for casual swimming, so come for walking, photographs and quiet rather than a beach day, and bring layers in every season. Kayaking from the cove is possible for experienced paddlers. Mendocino village is close for food and lodging, though rooms book out far ahead in summer. It suits couples, hikers and campers; it is small, and the headlands can be crowded on summer weekends.

California State Parks has generally kept the day-use area open from about sunrise to sunset, with the campground following its own check-in and quiet-hours rules - confirm both. There is typically a per-vehicle day-use fee collected at a kiosk or self-pay station, and some staffing varies by season. Winter storms can close trails, flood the canyon path or shut the headlands viewing area when waves are large, and fog can hide the coast on any day of the year. The campground may close or reduce services in the wet months. Check the State Parks page and call the district office before a long drive, because this stretch of the Mendocino coast is far from anywhere with signal.
