Saadani National Park
Saadani National Park (2005), The Only Tanzanian Park Where The Savanna Meets The Ocean, With Green Turtle Nesting On The Beach, Giraffes, Buffalo, Hippos And Crocodiles On The Wami River, And Boat Safaris. A Short 4 5 Hour Drive From Dar Es Salaam Or A Flight From Zanzibar. · Saadani, Pwani
Saadani is a coastal park of about 1,100 sq km where the savanna runs down to the Indian Ocean, the only Tanzanian park that does. The Wami river winds through it with hippos, crocodiles and some 300 bird species, and giraffe, buffalo, hartebeest, waterbuck and wildebeest graze not far from the surf. Lions are shy and elephants rare. The honest picture: the wildlife is thinner than in the northern parks, and nobody should come expecting the Serengeti. What you get is a cheap, quiet mix of bush and beach, with a boat safari, a walk with a ranger and a swim on the same day. It is a trip for Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar residents, and for visitors with a spare weekend. Getting there takes 4-5 hours by road from Dar, or a short flight. Sleep inside, and do not try it as a day trip. Fees are charged per day and per vehicle, so one night costs less than it seems. The trip suits someone already on the coast who wants a taste of bush, and it is a long way to come for animals alone. Come for the mix of bush and sea, not for a long list of big game.

The park is open every day of the year, and the gates take entries in daylight hours only. Game drives and boat trips run by day, and night drives are NOT normally allowed. Some tracks are CLOSED or impassable in the heavy rains. Confirm gate times and track conditions with your lodge.
