Sabal Palm Sanctuary

Nature Preserve · Brownsville, Texas

The last substantial stand of native sabal palm forest left in the United States, on a bend of the Rio Grande south of Brownsville — a few hundred acres of what once ran for forty miles along the river before it was cleared for farmland. It is dense, humid, full of birds found nowhere else in the country, and it sits on the river side of the border fence.

⚠ ADMISSION AND HOURS ARE NOT STATED HERE — I could not verify them; check before travelling, and ⚠ CONFIRM ACCESS ARRANGEMENTS AS WELL, because the sanctuary sits on the river side of the border fence and access here has been affected by border infrastructure in the past. ⚠ Come November to April; summer in closed subtropical forest is oppressive. ⚠ Bring serious mosquito repellent. Sit at the feeders near the visitor centre — that is where the Valley specialities come.
