Sabie and the Panorama Waterfalls

The Densest Cluster Of Accessible Waterfalls In South Africa Mac Mac, Lone Creek, Bridal Veil, Horseshoe And Forest Falls All Within Half An Hour Of One Another Set In The Pine And Eucalyptus Plantations That Make This The Forestry Capital Of The Country, With A Gold Rush Town Of 1895 At The Centre Of Them · Sabie, Mpumalanga

There is nowhere else in South Africa where you can see five substantial waterfalls inside half an hour's driving, and the reason is boring and geological: the Mpumalanga escarpment drops roughly a kilometre over a short distance, and every stream coming off the highveld has to fall off the edge of it somewhere. Mac Mac drops in a double stream through a gorge, Lone Creek comes down in a single curtain into rainforest, Bridal Veil does what its name says, Horseshoe bends around a rock lip and Forest Falls needs a short walk to reach. Sabie itself was a gold town from 1895 that turned into the forestry capital of the country, which is why the drive between the falls runs through pine and eucalyptus plantations rather than bush. Blyde River Canyon has God's Window and Bourke's Luck forty minutes north, and take the coaches with them. This row is the water, and it is the better half of the Panorama Route.
