Sabino Canyon Recreation Area

Coronado National Forest Recreation Area · Tucson, Arizona

A desert canyon in the Santa Catalina Mountains on Tucson's north-east edge, part of Coronado National Forest and the city's favourite nature escape. A paved road winds almost four miles up the canyon past saguaros, cottonwoods and stone bridges over Sabino Creek, but private cars are not allowed on it: visitors walk, or ride the narrated, electric-hybrid Sabino Canyon Crawler shuttle and hop off at its stops. After winter rain or spring snowmelt the creek fills clear pools and small cascades, and the Bear Canyon trail leads to Seven Falls. In 2026 the Crawler cost $15 for adults and a vehicle day pass was $8. Dogs are not allowed, because the Catalinas are bighorn sheep habitat. Summer heat is extreme, and flash floods have swept people away at the creek crossings.

The recreation area is open daily; the visitor centre and Crawler shuttles keep seasonal hours, with moonlight tours on selected nights (check sabinocanyoncrawler.com and the Coronado National Forest site).
