Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge
National Wildlife Refuge · Middletown, Rhode Island
A blunt headland of shrubland and rocky shore at the end of a road in Middletown, three miles from the Newport mansions and utterly unlike them. It is a stopover and wintering ground for migratory birds, and it is one of the more reliable places on the American east coast to see harlequin ducks, which winter on the rocks here in numbers. It is free, it has a visitor centre and two and a half miles of trail, and in January it is the best thing on Aquidneck Island.
769 Sachuest Point Road, Middletown, Rhode Island, 02842, United States
FREE, with no fee and no permit. The refuge trails and car park are open daily in daylight. ⚠ THE VISITOR CENTRE IS OPEN DAILY BUT ONLY FROM 10:00 TO 15:00 — a short window, and it holds the only restrooms, drinking water and the gift shop run by the Friends of the Rhode Island Refuges. ⚠ HIGH WAVE ACTION AND HEAVY STORMS OFTEN IMPACT THE ROAD TO SACHUEST AND MAY CLOSE IT — check before travelling, because this is the most common reason a trip here fails. Sections of shoreline close seasonally to protect nesting piping plovers. NO DOGS ARE PERMITTED anywhere on the refuge. Over 2.5 miles of trail, including the 1.5-mile Ocean View Loop and the 0.6-mile Flint Point trail, plus the accessible Sakonnet Overlook platform near the car park.
