Saepinum

Archaeological Area Of Altilia Saepinum, A Complete Walled Roman Town On A Transhumance Route, Largely Unfenced With A Farming Hamlet Inside The Walls · Sepino, Molise

Saepinum is a complete small Roman town lying in a field in Molise with a farming hamlet built into one corner of it, no fence, no turnstile and on most days nobody else there. The walls stand with their four gates, the paved main streets cross at the forum, and the basilica colonnade, the theatre, the baths and the market building are all legible without needing anything explained. What makes it unusual is not scale but completeness and emptiness: you walk in off a country road and the town is simply there, with farm buildings and a few houses sitting inside the ancient walls where people put them centuries ago and never left. It grew on a drove road used for moving sheep down from the Apennines, which is why it is where it is. Molise is the region Italians joke does not exist, it gets almost no visitors, and this is the best argument against the joke. Take water and a picnic, because there is nothing at the site and very little for several kilometres around it.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED, and the archaeological area largely has none: it is unfenced and unstaffed, so daylight and weather are the real constraint. The site museum beside the theatre keeps limited and irregular hours, shorter in winter, and is the one thing here that can be shut when you arrive. There is no ticket office to ring. Sepino village up the hill has the nearest bar and shop, on ordinary small-town hours with a long early-afternoon closure. Confirm the museum if it matters to you.
