Sag Harbor
Old Town · Sag Harbor, New York
⚠ A REAL WHALING PORT THAT BECAME A HAMPTONS VILLAGE WITHOUT LOSING ITSELF — a deepwater harbour on the South Fork of Long Island that in the 1840s rivalled Nantucket, with one of the largest collections of pre-1850 buildings in New York State. ⚠ MELVILLE PUT IT IN MOBY-DICK, and it has been a writers' and artists' town ever since.
Main Street, Sag Harbor, New York, 11963, United States
⚠ AN OPEN VILLAGE — free to walk, and the walking is the point. ⚠ COME IN MAY, EARLY JUNE, SEPTEMBER OR OCTOBER. JULY AND AUGUST ARE THE FULL HAMPTONS SEASON: parking is near impossible, restaurants need booking days ahead and prices peak. ⚠ VILLAGE PARKING IS TIME-LIMITED AND AGGRESSIVELY ENFORCED — read the signs. ⚠ THE SAG HARBOR WHALING AND HISTORICAL MUSEUM IS SEASONAL; check before travelling, as are many village businesses in winter. ⚠ AZUREST, NINEVAH AND SAG HARBOR HILLS — the historic African American beach communities founded in the 1940s — ARE PRIVATE RESIDENTIAL AREAS, not attractions. Read about them; do not tour them. ⚠ The ferry from North Haven reaches Shelter Island, and a second ferry continues to Greenport on the North Fork.
