Saguaro National Park
National Park · Tucson, Arizona
Two districts of Sonoran Desert on either side of Tucson protecting forests of giant saguaro cacti, which can grow over 40 feet tall and live for well over a century, sprouting their first arms only after decades. The Tucson Mountain District to the west has the densest stands and ancient petroglyphs; the Rincon Mountain District to the east has an eight-mile paved loop drive and trails climbing into forested sky-island mountains. The saguaro blooms in May and June. It is a desert park: summer heat is dangerous, and the best months are October to April. In summer, hike only at dawn and carry plenty of water.
