Saint Anne Mountain
A Hilltop Franciscan Sanctuary And Pilgrimage Site In Upper Silesia, With A Basilica, A Lourdes Grotto, A Calvary Of Chapels And An Open Air Amphitheatre. The Hill Was A Symbol For Both Poles And Germans After The 1921 Silesian Uprising. Draws Pilgrims On Saint Anne'S Day In Late July · Gora Swietej Anny, Opole
Saint Anne Mountain, Gora Swietej Anny, is a low volcanic hill in Upper Silesia, about 35 km from Opole, topped by a Franciscan sanctuary that has drawn pilgrims for centuries. A late Baroque basilica crowns the hill, and a Calvary of chapels climbs the slope in the woods. A Lourdes grotto stands below, and an open-air amphitheatre built in the 1930s holds big events. The hill also carries political memory: in 1921 it was fought over in the Silesian uprising, and monuments to the insurgents stand here. Polish and German Silesians both claimed it as a symbol, and its story is disputed, so read the plaques with that in mind. The feast of Saint Anne in late July brings crowds of pilgrims; outside those days the hill is quiet. It suits pilgrims, walkers and people curious about Silesian history. If you want sightseeing with cafes and nightlife, it is not for you, and it is poor for a day without a car.

The grounds, the Calvary paths and the woods are open at all hours and free to enter. The basilica is commonly open through the day, with Mass times posted at the door, and it may be closed to sightseers during services. Small museum rooms, the monastery shop and any cafe or snack bar keep shorter hours and are commonly closed on Mondays or in winter. The amphitheatre is closed unless an event is on, though the outer path may be walkable. Around the feast of Saint Anne in late July, everything is open longer and very crowded. Confirm Mass times, feast dates and museum hours before you travel.
