Saint Croix Island International Historic Site
Historic Site · Calais, Maine
In 1604 a French expedition under Pierre Dugua and Samuel de Champlain wintered on a small island in the Saint Croix River, and by spring nearly half of them were dead of scurvy. It was one of the earliest European attempts at settlement in North America and it failed. The island now sits on the Canada-United States border, in the heart of the traditional lands of the Passamaquoddy people, and it is the only International Historic Site in the National Park System.
