Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park
National Park Service Unit Preserving The Home, Studios And Gardens Of Sculptor Augustus Saint Gaudens, Heart Of The Cornish Art Colony; New Hampshire'S Only NPS Unit Apart From The Appalachian Trail; Redesignated A National Historical Park In 2019. · Cornish, New Hampshire
The summer home, studios and gardens of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the most celebrated American sculptor of the late nineteenth century, on a hillside above the Connecticut River in Cornish. He came here in 1885, drew painters, sculptors and writers after him to form the Cornish Art Colony, and lived here year-round from 1900 until his death in 1907. His house, which he called Aspet, his Little Studio, the formal gardens with their hedges and birch allee, and a gallery of his work are preserved by the National Park Service, which took the site over in 1964; it became a National Historical Park in 2019. On the grounds stand bronze casts of his great public monuments: the Shaw Memorial to the Black soldiers of the 54th Massachusetts, the Standing Lincoln, the Farragut statue and the hooded, silent figure of the Adams Memorial in a ring of hemlocks. In summer there have been Sunday afternoon concerts on the lawn and a sculptor at work in a studio. Buildings open roughly late May to October; the grounds and woodland trails are open all year.

The historic buildings - Aspet, the Little Studio and the galleries - have been open daily from about the Memorial Day weekend in late May through the end of October, during daytime hours, with the last entry well before closing. From November to late May the buildings, visitor center and shop are closed, but the grounds and woodland trails have stayed open from dawn to dusk year-round for walking, snowshoeing and skiing, with no services and unploughed paths. Summer concerts, talks and sculpture demonstrations run only in July and August on set days. Hours and dates change with Park Service staffing, so confirm before driving out; the site is remote.
