Saint Joseph's Oratory

Minor Basilica / Shrine Of Saint Brother André · Montreal, Quebec

A basilica on the northwest slope of Mount Royal in Montreal, ⚠ THE LARGEST CHURCH IN CANADA, WITH A GREEN COPPER DOME THAT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST IN THE WORLD AND RISES TO THE HIGHEST POINT IN THE CITY. It grew from a small wooden chapel built in 1904 by Brother André Bessette, a humble doorkeeper credited by many with healings, who was declared a saint in 2010. His tomb is in the church, and the Votive Chapel beside it glows with thousands of candles and walls of crutches left by pilgrims. The basilica itself, begun in 1924 and finished in 1967, holds a vast modern interior, while a crypt church, a museum and a hillside garden Way of the Cross fill out the site. Pilgrims still climb the central flight of 99 wooden steps on their knees. ⚠ THE ORATORY HAS BEEN IN A MAJOR RENOVATION PROGRAM - CHECK WHICH AREAS ARE OPEN. ⚠ DRESS RESPECTFULLY; MASSES RUN THROUGH THE DAY.
