Saint Louis Art Museum

Art Museum · St. Louis, Missouri

One of the principal free art museums in the United States, housed in the Palace of Fine Arts built by Cass Gilbert for the 1904 World's Fair - the only major building from the fair put up as permanent, everything else being plaster. It sits on Art Hill above the Grand Basin in Forest Park, and its collection runs from ancient Egypt through a very strong German Expressionist holding to contemporary work. A 2013 extension by David Chipperfield added a low, dark, precise wing that argues quietly with Gilbert's.
