Sairam-Ugam National Park
Sairam Ugam State National Nature Park (2006), Included In The UNESCO Western Tien Shan World Heritage Site (2016) With Aksu Zhabagly. Alpine Slopes, Juniper Forest And Rich Wild Tulip And Fruit Tree Flora; Hard To Reach Without A Guide. · Zhabagly, Turkistan
Sairam-Ugam is a mountain national park in the western Tian Shan, in the Turkistan region north of the Uzbek border and a few hours from Shymkent and Turkistan. It was created in 2006 and is part of the UNESCO Western Tien-Shan inscription of 2016, shared with Aksu-Zhabagly and Karatau - it is not a separate World Heritage site. The ground rises from steppe foothills through juniper slopes and wild fruit and walnut groves to high alpine ridges, with Sairam peak at about 4,200 m. In April and early May the lower slopes carry wild tulips. This is a Tier 3 stop: it suits people already based in Shymkent or Turkistan with a spare day, a driver and some patience, not a first-time visitor. There are very few facilities, and the tracks need 4WD. The park touches the Uzbek border and a Kyrgyz frontier zone, so entry is controlled and permits are arranged through the park office. Sairam peak itself is for mountaineers. Worth the detour in spring for flowers and quiet; skip it if you have a day and no transport, because Aksu-Zhabagly is easier to reach and better set up.
Mountain national park of the western Tian Shan along the Kazakh-Uzbek frontier near Shymkent, with the Sairam peak (about 4,200 m) and the Sairam Lake area reached by track from Tulkibas, Zhabagly, Turkistan, Kazakhstan
The park has no fixed visitor hours because most of it is open mountain with no gate or ticket booth. Access is controlled by the park office and border guards, so plan the visit around the office working day, usually weekday office hours, and arrange the permit before you drive up. Rangers on the ground may stop vehicles at checkpoints, and the frontier zone has stricter rules than the park itself. Daylight is the only safe time to travel the tracks, and the upper slopes can be closed by snow from late autumn to spring. Confirm office hours, checkpoint rules and track conditions by phone through a local driver or the park office before going.
