Salk Institute for Biological Studies

Modern Architecture · La Jolla, California

Louis Kahn's 1965 research campus on the cliff above Torrey Pines, and one of the buildings architects travel to see. Jonas Salk, having just given away the polio vaccine, asked for something worthy of a visit by Picasso — and then, on Luis Barragán's advice, stripped the courtyard of every plant so that a single channel of water runs across bare travertine toward the Pacific.

10010 North Torrey Pines Road, La Jolla, California, 92037, United States

Courtyard generally free on weekdays during business hours. Guided tours by advance booking.
