Salt Point State Park

State Park · Jenner, California

Salt Point State Park lies on Highway 1 on the Sonoma County coast, north of Jenner, where a rugged shelf of sandstone meets the open Pacific. It is known for tafoni, sandstone weathered into honeycomb pockets and hollows that look carved by hand, and for kelp-filled coves and wave-battered rock shelves. Gerstle Cove is a marine reserve - an underwater reserve with its own fishing rules, so confirm what is allowed - and divers and abalone hunters come here under strict state rules. Campgrounds sit in the park - confirm - and a pygmy forest grows on poor inland soil - confirm access. Kruse Rhododendron State Natural Reserve is nearby at the park's inland edge. The water is cold, the surf is dangerous and cliff edges give way, so this is a place for looking, photography and cautious exploring, not swimming. It suits divers, campers and slow road-trippers, and it is a poor choice for children who want to paddle.

California State Parks has generally run Salt Point as a day-use park from around sunrise until sunset, with campgrounds on their own check-in times and entry fees collected by a pay machine or at a kiosk - confirm the current hours, the day-use fee and which areas are open. Fog and wind are common, winter storms bring heavy surf and can close viewpoints, and Highway 1 on this coast can be closed or slowed by slides. Parts of the marine reserve and some trails may be restricted at times. Cell signal is poor or absent. Check the State Parks page and road alerts on the day you go.
