Salt Spring Island

Salt Spring Island (Islands Trust Area) · Salt Spring Island, British Columbia

Salt Spring Island is the largest and most populous of the Gulf Islands in the Strait of Georgia, British Columbia, reached only by BC Ferries or floatplane. The main village is Ganges, a small harbour town of galleries, cafes and shops that holds a well known Saturday Market from roughly April to October (confirm). The island has long drawn artists and small farmers, so you will find studios, cheese and lamb producers and roadside stands on quiet rural roads. Mount Maxwell has a steep lookout over the south end, and Ruckle Provincial Park has a heritage farm, rocky shore and walk-in camping. It suits couples, cyclists who like hills and anyone who wants a slow day or two. It is not a sandy-beach resort: the shores are rock, pebble and shell, and the water is cold. The hard part is the ferry, which can mean long summer queues and a missed sailing, so confirm times and reserve vehicle space early.

The island is open all year, but much of it is seasonal. The Saturday Market in Ganges usually runs from about spring to autumn on Saturday mornings to mid-afternoon, with a smaller midweek market in summer - confirm dates and times. Many studios, farm stands and cafes keep shorter hours or close from late autumn to spring, and some open only by appointment or on a published studio tour weekend. Provincial parks are normally open from dawn to dusk, with gates and services seasonal. Ferry sailings are the real schedule: the last boats off the island leave in the evening and change by route and season, so check the BC Ferries timetable for your day, and confirm fire bans in dry summers.
