Sam Houston National Forest

National Forest · New Waverly, Texas

Roughly 163,000 acres of loblolly and shortleaf pine fifty miles north of Houston, in the belt where the pine forests of the Deep South meet the blackland prairies — a mix that produces eastern and western bird species found together nowhere else in Texas. Its best-known asset is the Lone Star Hiking Trail, 128 miles of continuously marked footpath, part of which carries National Recreation Trail status. Lake Conroe and Lake Livingston sit on its edges.
