Sambor Prei Kuk
UNESCO World Heritage Site: Archaeological Site Of Ancient Ishanapura (2017). The Capital Of The Pre Angkorian Chenla Kingdom In The 7th Century, More Than A Hundred Brick Sanctuaries In Forest, Some Octagonal And Carved With Flying Palaces. Older Than Angkor By 500 Years And Almost Empty Of Visitors · Kampong Thom, Kampong Thom
Sambor Prei Kuk is the site of Ishanapura, the capital of the pre-Angkorian Chenla kingdom in the 7th century, about 30 km from Kampong Thom town and 190 km from Siem Reap. UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 2017. More than a hundred brick sanctuaries stand among trees, built some 500 years before Angkor Wat, and several towers are octagonal, a rare shape in Khmer building. Prasat Sambor is the main northern group, Prasat Tao is guarded by two stone lions, and Prasat Yeay Poeun has strangler roots wrapped around its walls. The carving is worn, many towers lean or are in pieces, and signs are few, so expect ruins in forest, not a polished park. The compensation is quiet: even in the dry season you may meet few other visitors. Landmines once lay here, and clearance has been done, but you must still stay on paths. A visit takes half a day, and local community ticket sellers and guides run the entry.

The park is usually open daily in daylight, from early morning until late afternoon, with no midday closing. Last entry is well before dusk and the gate staff may ask you to leave at closing time, so confirm hours locally. Nothing inside is FREE, since the ticket covers all three main groups, but the dirt road in and the village stalls at the gate are open without charge. The forest paths away from the three main groups are CLOSED or unmarked, and cleared lanes are the only safe ground. Some towers are roped off and CLOSED to climbing. In heavy rain, the paths may be impassable and the site may close briefly, so check in Kampong Thom.
