San Antonio de los Banos
A River Town South West Of Havana Holding The Only Museum Of Humour In Cuba And The International Film School Gabriel Garcia Marquez Founded And Taught At · San Antonio de los Banos, Artemisa
San Antonio de los Banos is a quiet town on the Ariguanabo river an hour south-west of Havana, and it holds two things out of proportion to its size. The first is the Museo del Humor, the only museum of humour in Cuba - graphic satire, caricature and cartoons going back to the nineteenth century, housed in a colonial building and host to an international biennial that draws work from across Latin America. The second is three kilometres outside the town: the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Television, founded in 1986 by Gabriel Garcia Marquez with Fernando Birri and Julio Garcia Espinosa to train film-makers from Latin America, Africa and Asia. Garcia Marquez taught scriptwriting there himself for years. It is a working school rather than a sight, and visiting means asking first. Silvio Rodriguez, who more or less invented nueva trova, was born here, which the town will tell you within about four minutes of your arriving.
