San Carlos and Nacapule Canyon
A Desert Resort On The Sea Of Cortez Beneath The Jagged Cerro Tetakawi, Popular With US Snowbirds And Sonora Families, With Sandy Beaches, Whale Watching In Winter, Sailing And The Nacapule Canyon Palm Oasis For A Short Hike. A Winter And Easter Beach Town, Hot In Summer · San Carlos, Sonora
San Carlos is a desert resort town on the Sea of Cortez in Sonora, about 20 km north-west of Guaymas, set beneath the jagged peak of Cerro Tetakawi. The bay holds marinas, sailboats, sandy beaches such as Playa Algodones and a long season of snowbirds who arrive from the United States and Canada with RVs for the winter. From about December to March, whales pass offshore and boat trips go out to see them. A short drive from town, the Nacapule canyon is a palm oasis hidden between red rock walls, reached by a hike that includes a rock scramble. The town suits retirees, boaters, families from Hermosillo and anyone who wants a calm, English-friendly beach week. It is worth the detour from November to April; it is not worth it in summer, when the heat passes 40 C, or if you want lively nightlife or a wild coast. Check current Sonora travel advice before you go and drive the highway by day, especially at night when trucks are slow.

The beaches and bay are open all year and are FREE to use, with no gate. Marinas, boat operators and cafes keep seasonal hours and many smaller businesses are CLOSED or reduced from about May to October when snowbirds leave. Whale-watching and sailing trips usually run in the morning and need a booking. Nacapule canyon is best entered early in the day, before the heat, and access can depend on a local guide or the landowner, so confirm before you go. The canyon can be CLOSED to hikers after heavy rain or when pools run high.
