San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Safari Park · Escondido, California

San Diego Zoo Safari Park sits in the hills outside Escondido, in north San Diego County, and is much larger than the city zoo: a large park, well over 1,000 acres, built around open habitats where giraffes, rhinos, antelope and other African species share space as they would in the field. Visitors cover it on foot, on the Africa Tram and, for an extra fee, on a caravan safari that brings you close to the herds. The park also breeds endangered animals, including the California condor, and has a strong rhino conservation program. It is hilly and sunny with little shade, so this is a long walking day, hotter than the coast, and best done early in the day. The San Diego Zoo is a separate live row about 30 miles south, and combo tickets for both are usually better value than buying them separately. Confirm prices, tram inclusion and safari rules before booking, and check the weather for Escondido, not the coast.

The park generally opens in the morning and closes in the late afternoon, with longer hours in summer and on holiday periods and shorter days in winter. Animal feedings, keeper talks and shows run on set times through the day, and some experiences, such as the caravan safari and special tours, operate on their own schedules and need advance booking. The Africa Tram usually runs most of the open day, and earlier rides are cooler and show more active animals. Hours change by season and for special events, so check the official calendar for the exact times on your date, and arrive at opening on warm days. Late entry is possible but cuts the day short.
