San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site

Battlefield · La Porte, Texas

The marshy ground east of Houston where, on 21 April 1836, Sam Houston's Texian army destroyed Santa Anna's force in about eighteen minutes and won Texas its independence. A 567-foot art deco column crowned by a 220-ton star stands over it — twelve feet taller than the Washington Monument, and described as the tallest war memorial in the world — with a museum in its base, an observation floor near the top, and a 1,777-foot reflecting pool running away from it.

1 Monument Circle, La Porte, Texas, 77571, United States
