San Juan Island National Historical Park

Historic Site · Friday Harbor, Washington

Two former military camps at opposite ends of San Juan Island, preserved because of the Pig War - a boundary dispute in which Britain and the United States both occupied the island from 1859 to 1872 and the only casualty in thirteen years was a pig. American Camp is windswept prairie and beach at the south end; English Camp is a sheltered formal garden and blockhouse on a cove twelve miles north. The dispute was eventually settled by arbitration, with the Kaiser of Germany as referee.

Grounds at both American Camp and English Camp are open daily year round, dawn to roughly 11 PM, and are free. The visitor centres and the historic buildings keep shorter and seasonal hours, with English Camp buildings generally open summer only. Reaching the park requires a Washington State Ferries crossing to Friday Harbor, which has its own timetable and its own queues.
