San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area

State Park · Gustine, California

San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area sits in the dry Diablo Range foothills off Highway 152 on Pacheco Pass, west of Los Banos and east of Gilroy. The big reservoir behind B.F. Sisk Dam is part of the California State Water Project and a federal water system - confirm the operators - and it stores water pumped up from the Delta, so the level swings widely with the seasons and the shoreline can look bare in late summer. People come for boating, fishing, windsurfing and camping, and for the strong afternoon winds that make it a known place for sail sports. It is not a lush park: the hills are grass and oak, brown for most of the year and green and flowery in spring. Summers are hot and dry, winters mild. A visitor center and several shoreline areas are mentioned for the park, but confirm which are open. Allow a half day to a full day, and bring all the food, water and shade you need, because there is no shop on the shore.

State Parks has generally set day-use hours from early morning until around sunset, with the gates and boat launch areas following their own posted times, and the campgrounds and some shoreline areas running on a seasonal calendar - confirm the current hours before you drive out. The Romero Visitor Center has not been staffed every day and has kept limited, changing hours, so check before you plan a stop there. Low water, algae notices, wind advisories and fire danger can close ramps, beaches or whole areas at short notice. Summer weekends bring the longest hours of use and the heaviest traffic on Highway 152. Mobile signal fades in places along the shore, so check the official State Parks page the morning you leave.
