San Millan de la Cogolla

UNESCO World Heritage Site (San Millan Yuso And Suso Monasteries, Inscribed 1997), Holding The Glosas Emilianenses, Among The Earliest Surviving Written Castilian And Basque · San Millan de la Cogolla, La Rioja

Two monasteries in a fold of the Rioja hills, and the reason they are a World Heritage Site is a set of margin notes. A tenth-century monk working here annotated a Latin manuscript in the local vernacular, and the Glosas Emilianenses are among the earliest surviving written traces of Castilian, with some lines in Basque as well. The upper monastery, Suso, is the older and stranger of the two: part cave, part Visigothic, part Mozarabic, built into the hillside around the cell of a sixth-century hermit, with the tomb of the poet Gonzalo de Berceo's subject inside. The lower one, Yuso, is a vast sixteenth-century Benedictine pile with a library of several hundred codices. Suso can only be reached by a booked shuttle from the valley floor, which catches visitors out constantly. It is twenty minutes off the wine route and almost nobody on a Rioja trip comes, which makes it the quietest World Heritage Site in northern Spain by some margin.
