Sand Bar State Park

Beach · Milton, Vermont

Fifteen acres and two thousand feet of sand at the Milton end of the natural sandbar that runs out across Lake Champlain toward South Hero - and the sandbar is the point, because the water on top of it stays only a few feet deep a long way out and warms up early. That combination, a wide sand beach and lake you can walk into for a hundred yards without going under, makes it the best swimming water in this folder for small children and the least alarming for anyone else. There are picnic grounds with grills under the trees and a play area, and the season runs from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day and not a day beyond.

1215 US Route 2, Milton, Vermont, 05468, United States

⚠ SEASONAL AND SHORT - open MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND TO LABOR DAY WEEKEND and closed entirely otherwise, with no shoulder season at all. A modest per-person Vermont State Parks day-use fee, parking included. ⚠ THE BEACH SITS ON A NATURAL SANDBAR RUNNING ACROSS LAKE CHAMPLAIN toward South Hero, so THE WATER STAYS ONLY A FEW FEET DEEP A LONG WAY OUT over smooth sand, and it WARMS EARLY AND PROPERLY - which makes this the best family swimming water in Vermont and the reason to come. 2,000 feet of sand beach, shaded and open picnic grounds with tables and cooking grills, and a play area. ⚠ NO CAMPING. ⚠ DO NOT ASSUME A LIFEGUARD IS ON DUTY - supervise children directly, and note that the sandbar which lets you wade a hundred yards out lets them do the same. ⚠ THE CAR PARK FILLS AND THE PARK MAY CLOSE TO NEW ARRIVALS on hot July and August weekends - go early, midweek, or late in the day, when it empties out completely. Wind builds a chop quickly over shallow open water with no shelter. ⚠ IT IS DIRECTLY ON US ROUTE 2, the road to the Champlain Islands.
