Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway

Scenic Byway Along Nebraska Highway 2 (Hedge Whether Nationally Designated) Through The Nebraska Sandhills · Thedford, Nebraska

The Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway follows Nebraska Highway 2 for roughly 270 miles from Grand Island in the east to Alliance in the Panhandle, and for most of the way it crosses the Nebraska Sandhills, the largest area of grass-covered sand dunes in the Western Hemisphere, roughly a quarter of the state. It is a Nebraska scenic byway and has been reported as nationally designated too; check. It is a two-lane road through cattle country where dunes held in place by prairie grass roll to the horizon, windmills pump water from the Ogallala Aquifer into stock tanks, and long BNSF coal trains run beside the highway. The towns - Broken Bow, Dunning, Halsey, Thedford, Mullen, Hyannis - are small and far apart, many with a cafe, a grain elevator and little else. The Middle Loup and Dismal rivers, the hand-planted Nebraska National Forest at Halsey and hundreds of shallow lakes in the west add water and birds. The route crosses from Central to Mountain time. Services are thin, and the emptiness is the point: it is a drive, not a destination with a gate.

Nebraska Highway 2, Grand Island to Alliance, Thedford, Nebraska, 69166, United States

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the highway itself is open 24 hours a day, year-round, except when blizzards, ground blizzards or flooding close sections, which the Nebraska 511 road report announces. What keeps hours are the services along it: small-town fuel stations often close in the evening and some on Sundays, cafes may open early and close by mid-afternoon or early evening and shut one or two days a week, and national forest campgrounds and river outfitters are largely seasonal, roughly late spring to early autumn. The traps that ruin a day are running out of fuel between towns, arriving for dinner after the kitchen closes, forgetting the hour's time change near Hyannis and driving the last stretch in the dark. Confirm current times before relying on them.
