Sangiran Early Man Site
UNESCO World Heritage Site Inscribed 1996; Roughly Half Of All Known Homo Erectus Fossils In The World Have Come Out Of This One Eroding Dome Of Sediment · Sragen, Central Java
ROUGHLY HALF OF ALL KNOWN HOMO ERECTUS FOSSILS IN THE WORLD HAVE COME OUT OF SANGIRAN - something like sixty individuals from a global total of about a hundred and twenty, found in one eroding dome of sediment in central Java. The ground here exposes around a million and a half years of layers in sequence, which is what makes it scientifically extraordinary: not just the fossils but their position in time. EUGENE DUBOIS FOUND JAVA MAN AT TRINIL NEARBY IN 1891, the first early hominin ever found outside Europe and the thing that moved the search for human origins out of Europe for good; VON KOENIGSWALD worked Sangiran itself from 1934. WHAT YOU VISIT IS A GOOD MODERN MUSEUM AND A LANDSCAPE, not a dig - and you should know that there is a documented local trade in forged fossils sold to visitors around the site, so buy nothing here however convincing the story that comes with it - and check before setting out that it is not a Monday, when the museums close.

THE MUSEUM COMPLEX OPENS IN DAYLIGHT and CLOSES ON MONDAYS, as most Indonesian museums do; entry is cheap with the usual dual pricing. THERE ARE SEVERAL CLUSTER MUSEUMS across the dome rather than one building - KRIKILAN is the main one and the one most visitors see. IT IS ABOUT FORTY-FIVE MINUTES FROM SOLO, also called Surakarta, which has flights and trains, and roughly two hours from Yogyakarta. GUIDES ARE AVAILABLE AT THE MUSEUM and are worth taking, because the landscape outside means nothing without someone to explain the strata. THIS IS NOT AN ACTIVE DIG YOU CAN WATCH. BE AWARE OF FOSSIL SELLERS around the site: a local trade in forged and illegally excavated material is documented, and buying it is both a scam and, for genuine material, an offence.
